Encouraging Economic Growth through Innovative Waste Management in Indonesia

Landfill garbage is one of contributors of methane gas on the Earth, which massively contributes to greenhouse gas effects and global warming. It can also damage the ozone layer. Indonesia has committed itself to the successful implementation of SDGs. “Kantin Gas Methan” (methane gas canteen) is food cafeteria micro business at Jatibarang/Central Java, which is using garbage as a method of payment. Methane gas can be used for cooking and is provided by the local government for free.

Kantin Gas Methan serves both consumers who pay by using money and/or garbage. The collected garbage will be weighed and converted to the price of food. The activity is aiming at helping the scavengers’ economic.
