Waste Landfill is a large contributor to methane gas on Earth. The contributing to the effects of greenhouse gases and global warming. It can damage the ozone layer. Canteen Methan Gas is a micro-scale canteen in Jatibarang, Central Java. The canteen uses the barter payment method. Our team choose waste management as a our project because we wanted to encourage the local government in waste management in the landfill. The government of Semarang manages waste in the Jatibarang landfill such a as becomes methane gas which is very beneficial for many people.
This project relates to SDG points 7, 9, 11, 13. Methane gas is the result of landfill processing, starting from waste that covered by the soil and membranes. The methane gas is flowed by installing pipes that are embedded in the soil. Then, the pipes of methane gas will be filtered become pure methane gas (SDG 7: renewable energy). Methane gas installation is managed by the government as a form of infrastructure innovation (SDG 9: industry, innovation and infrastructure). Beside waste management as an infrastructure, the community can also get the benefit and meet their daily needs. In Jatibarang landfill, the waste that was collected can be managed effectively. This is used by the surrounding community (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities). In the processing of waste in the Jatibarang landfill, it can produce methane gas from waste piles. If the pile of garbage is not managed, it will damage the ozone layer which can also affect climate change (SDG 13: Climate Action).
We started this project by highlighting food bartering activities with plastic waste between scavengers and methane gas stall owners. The concept of exchanging waste with food is very beneficial for both parties and the local government. Methane gas canteen is one of the support of the local government for the community. Methane gas canteen is managed by Mr. Sarimin. Previously, Mr. Sarimin was a scavenger in Jatibarang. The canteen cooks with methane gas that comes from landfill in the Jatibarang landfill. The gas is piped to the canteen.
With the presence of methane gas canteen, it can provide benefits for various parties. The community can feel the benefits of methane gas as a substitute for LPG gas. the scavengers can fulfill their daily needs by exchanging the collected waste (such as plastic, box, paper, and many more). Then, they will get food and drinks based on the weight of the collected garbage. The benefit is also obtained by Mr. Sarimin. Although the canteen of methane gas uses a barter system, Mr. Sarimin get a benefits from the sale of garbage with waste collectors. From the methane gas canteen, the local government can feel this benefit by developing infrastructure in the area.
